Are tarantulas deadly?

Tarantulas are not considered deadly to humans. Their venom is generally mild, and bites are usually no worse than a bee or wasp sting for a healthy adult.

Venom & Bite Effects

All tarantulas are venomous, but their venom is very weak toward humans.

A typical bite causes:

  • Local pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Symptoms similar to a bee sting

No confirmed human deaths from tarantula venom have been recorded.

Their Real Defense: Urticating Hairs

Many New World tarantulas (common in the pet trade) defend themselves by flicking irritating hairs, not by biting.

These hairs can cause itching or eye irritation but are not life-threatening.

When Can a Bite Be More Serious?

People with allergies, compromised immune systems, or unusual reactions may experience stronger symptoms — similar to how some react to insect stings.

Medical attention is recommended if:

  • Symptoms spread beyond the bite area
  • Breathing difficulty occurs
  • Severe swelling develops

It is nevertheless important to note that some tarantulas have more potent venom than others, for example the genus Poecilotheria or Heteroscodra.
