What does a scorpion sting feel like?
A scorpion sting can feel very different depending on the species, but people often describe a few common sensations:
What people typically feel
- A sharp, immediate pain — many compare it to being jabbed with a hot needle or a wasp sting.
- Burning or throbbing at the sting site that can last minutes to hours.
- Numbness or tingling spreading around the area.
- Swelling and redness similar to other insect stings.
When symptoms can be stronger
Some scorpions—especially certain species found in North Africa, the Middle East, the southwestern US, and parts of Latin America—can cause more intense reactions. These may include:
- Muscle twitching or spasms
- Sweating
- Difficulty swallowing
- Feeling unusually restless or anxious
Those reactions are uncommon but can be serious.
It is important to remember that depending on the species of scorpion, the level of venom activity as well as the pain from the sting can vary greatly and, in some cases, become deadly.
