Which insect has the shortest lifespan?
The insect with the shortest lifespan as an adult is the mayfly, whose adult stage can last only a few hours — and in some species, less than five minutes. This extreme brevity happens because the adult mayfly exists solely to reproduce; it cannot eat, and its body is built for mating and nothing else.
How short is its life?
Many adult mayflies live only a few hours to a day. Some species, like Dolania americana, have females that live under five minutes as adults.
Why is the lifespan so short?
Adults do not feed. Their mouthparts are vestigial (non-functional) and their digestive system is filled with air. Their only purpose is reproduction.
Once they emerge from the water as winged adults, they:
- swarm
- mate in flight
- lay eggs
- and die shortly after
But the larval stage is long
Mayflies spend months to years underwater as nymphs, feeding and growing. The “short lifespan” refers only to the adult stage, which is the final, reproductive phase.
