What are vampire crabs?
Vampire crabs are some of the most striking and unusual small crabs in the pet trade. Despite their spooky name, they’re not blood‑drinkers at all — the nickname comes from their vivid, glowing eyes and dramatic coloration.
What They Are
Vampire crabs belong to the genus Geosesarma, a group of tiny freshwater or semi‑terrestrial crabs native to parts of Southeast Asia. They’re typically less than 1 cm across the carapace and are known for their bright purple, orange, or patterned bodies paired with contrasting eyes.
Habitat & Lifestyle
They are semi‑terrestrial, meaning they spend much of their time on land but still need access to water. They live in groups and are considered social animals. They climb well and thrive in paludarium‑style enclosures that combine land and water.
Diet
Vampire crabs are omnivores. They’ll eat a mix of plant matter, small insects, and prepared foods. They’re hardy and generally easy to feed.
Reproduction
Unlike many crabs, Geosesarma species reproduce on land, with fully formed miniature crabs hatching directly from the eggs — no larval aquatic stage.
Why the Name “Vampire”?
The name comes from their bright yellow, white, or black eyes, which give them a dramatic, supernatural look. It has nothing to do with their feeding habits.
