How long does insect venom last?

How long insect venom typically stays active

Most insect venoms (bees, wasps, hornets, ants) are broken down by the body within a few hours. Symptoms, however, can last much longer than the venom itself. Your immune system’s reaction—not the venom—causes most of the swelling, redness, and itching.

Typical symptom duration

Mild reactions:

  • Pain: a few hours
  • Redness/itching: 1–2 days
  • Swelling: up to 2–3 days

Large local reactions:

  • Swelling and redness can last up to a week
  • This is still usually not dangerous, just uncomfortable

Allergic reactions (anaphylaxis):

  • These happen within minutes and require emergency care

Venom that lasts longer

Some insects inject venom that causes delayed or prolonged reactions:

  • Fire ants: pustules can last several days
  • Certain spiders: reactions can last days to weeks (though spiders aren’t insects)
