Do tarantulas bite?
Tarantulas can bite, but for humans the effects are usually mild. Most species cause pain similar to a bee sting, and serious medical problems are extremely rare. Old World species (Africa/Asia) can cause stronger symptoms, while New World species (Americas) tend to be milder.
Do Tarantulas Bite?
Tarantulas do have fangs and venom. They bite only when they feel threatened — it’s a defensive reaction, not aggression. Biting is often a last resort; most of the time, they will flee.
What Does a Tarantula Bite Do?
Typical effects (most common species):
- Pain similar to a bee or wasp sting
- Local redness, swelling, throbbing
- Symptoms usually stay at the bite site and fade within hours to a couple of days
Stronger reactions (mainly Old World tarantulas)
- More intense pain
- Possible muscle cramps or spasms lasting several days
Other risks: irritating hairs
Many New World tarantulas flick tiny hairs that can cause itching, rash, or eye irritation if they get into your skin or eyes.
What to Do If Bitten
- Wash the area with soap and water
- Avoid rubbing your eyes (because of hairs)
